Lihue (pronounced [li hu e]) is the second biggest town on the Hawaiian island of Kaua i after Kapa a.

In ancient times, Lihue was a minor village.

Lihu e means "cold chill" in the Hawaiian language. Lihue is positioned in the ancient precinct of Puna, the southeastern coast of the island, and territory division (ahupua a) of Kalapaki. Royal Governor Kaikio ewa officially made it his governing seat in 1837, moving it from Waimea; he gave the town its name after the territory he owned on Oahu by the same name.

With the emergence of the sugar trade in the 1800s, Lihue became the central town/city of the island with the assembly of a large sugar mill.

Subsequent plantation owner Paul Isenberg helped German citizens emigrate to Lihue starting in 1881, with the first Lutheran church in Hawaii established in 1883. Services were bringed in German well into the 1960s.

Lihue also homes the Kauai Museum, which details the history of Kauai. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 7.1 square miles (18 km2), of which, 6.3 square miles (16 km2) of it is territory and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) of it (11.11%) is water.

Lihue has a tropical wet and dry climate zone (Koppen classification As) with a mostly dry summer season. The normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 71.6 F (22.0 C) in February to 79.7 F (26.5 C) in August.

On average, there are 7.7 evenings annually with a low below 60 F (16 C), and readings of 90 F (32 C) or higher are quite rare, occurring on average once every eight years.

Temperature records range from 46 F (8 C) on January 14, 1930 up to only 91 F (33 C) as recently as October 9, 2012.

The record cool daily maximum is 67 F (19 C) as recently as December 19, 1981, while, conversely, the record warm daily minimum is 80 F (27 C) as recently as September 13, 2015. Normal annual rainfall is 37.05 inches (941 mm) spread over an average 195 days, but observed annual rainfall has ranged from 16.40 to 74.40 inches (417 to 1,890 mm) in 1983 and 1982, in the order given.

In the CDP the populace was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who were 65 years of age or older.

Lihue is served by the Lihue Airport, positioned in the CDP. The chief seaport for Kauai is at Nawiliwili Bay, directly southeast of town.

Lihue is also served by, The Kauai Bus, a enhance bus fitness serving the entire island of Kauai.

The town is home to the county administration building; Kauai's biggest shopping center, Kukui Grove Shopping Center, which homes the island's only big department store, Macy's; and a several big-box stores including K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Costco.

Lihue is home to Kauai Community College, part of the University of Hawaii system.

Lihue is also served by the Hawaii Department of Education.

Two K-5 elementary schools Wilcox Elementary School in Lihue, and Kaumualii Elementary School in downtown Hanamaulu, Hawaii serve the area.

All of the region is zoned to Kamakahelei Middle School and Kauai High School.

Island School, a private pre-kindergarten to 12 school, is also positioned in Lihue.
